Important Information
Homework
  • The students will have homework every night, Monday through Thursday.  They will copy their homework assignment into their assignment book each day.  No homework will be assigned on Fridays or over a holiday.
  • Each student has a “Take Home” folder. Any important notices or returned work will be on the “Notices” side of the folder, and any papers to be completed for homework will be on the “Homework” side of the folder.  Please check your child’s folder each night!  Please return any
notes or information for me in the “Notices” side of your child’s folder so they can turn it in when they unpack in the morning.
  • Homework needs to be checked over by a parent before sending it back to school.  This shows your child that there is a direct connection between home and school.
  • Homework is not only given to reinforce class work but to build responsibility.  Your child should complete the assignment for the day and return it to school promptly the next day.
  • If homework is taking more than 45 minutes to complete on regular basis, please let me know.  If your child is having difficulty with the homework, please notify me so we can  work together to remedy the situation.

Absences
Please send in an absence note with your child when they return to school.  It is required by law, and will be recorded as an illegal absence if a note is not sent to school.   If your child is absent, you can request for their work to be sent home with a student you choose as their “homework helper”.  If you would like their work sent home with a different student on the date of an absence, please call and leave a message with the office to let me know.  All missed work should be made up within two days of returning to school.
Birthdays
Please feel free to send in a special treat for the
class on or near your child’s birthday.  Summer
birthdays can celebrate any time of the year.  We
have snack every day around 2:30.  You can drop the
birthday snack off to the office or send it in with
your child.  We have 25 children in our class.
Birthday
Invitations
To avoid hurt feelings, birthday invitations may only
be handed out in school if all of the children in the
class are invited.  Otherwise, you will be getting an
address and phone list for those in the class who wish
to share that information.
Bus Procedure
For safety reasons, your child must have a note if
they are going home on a different bus.  If your child
is attending the After Care program after school, you
must call the office and send in a note if there are
any changes in the schedule.
Communication
If you ever have any questions or concerns, the best
way to contact me is through e-mail at
china.lecarreaux@gmail.com, send in a note with your
child, or call the main office (631) 654-8690 and
leave a message for me; and I will gladly get back to
you as soon as possible.  Communication is the key to
success!  Keep all lines of communication open so we
are on the same page.  I have also set up a website
which you can access through the Sachem web page by
clicking on Waverly and then my name.  I will update
the site throughout the year, so check it out!
Snack Time
Every day at approximately 2:30 p.m., the children will
have snack time.  Please send in a healthy snack each
day for your child.  Please send the snack in a bag or
lunchbox, clearly labelled with your child’s name to
avoid mix-ups!  We have a water fountain in our room,
but you may also send a small bottle of water with
your child if you wish.

P.E. Attire
On the days that we have P.E., children need to wear sneakers and suitable clothing in which they can participate comfortably in the activities. Please do not have them wear jewelry on these days! Be sure to check your schedule to see which days we have P.E.
Art Class
On the day that we have Art, the children will be
working with paint, glue, clay, etc.  Please be sure that
they are wearing suitable clothing.
Recess
We will try to go out for recess every day, weather
permitting.  Please dress your child accordingly for
the temperature of the day (i.e. – hats, gloves,
jackets, scarves, etc.).
Library and
Reading
Materials
Throughout the year, your child will be taking home
books to read, such as classroom books, library books,
and text books.  Please make sure that all reading
materials are returned the very next day.  Library
books are very easy to misplace.  If your child does
not return their book, they will not be allowed to take
out another book.  They are often very disappointed.
Please remind them when they take home their book
to read, to put it right back in their backpack when
they are finished.  Any lost or damanged books must
be replaced accordingly.
Lunch Money
It is very easy for the children to drop or misplace
their lunch money.  Please put all money for lunch or
snack in a labeled, sealed envelope or a money holder,
unless the child is in the pre-paid lunch program.
Grading
Policies
Grades will be determined by written tests and
quizzes, class work, project work, presentations,
homework, class participation, and general effort.
Projects and presentations are graded as tests.  If
you feel your child is struggling consistently, please
contact me regarding extra help!
State
Assessments
The state tests that will be administered during the
year are:
  • New York State English Language Arts
    Assessment
  • New York State Math Assessment

Websites with further information pertaining to the
tests will be provided in your Open School Night
folder. For more information and resources to help your child prepare for these tests, please see the class website!
